He was born December 7, 1916 in Grafton, West Virginia, the son of the late Francis M. Abel and Lizzie (Shriver) Abel.
John served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a glass worker for Hazel Atlas, Continental Can, and then retired from Kerr Glass in 1972. He was a member of the Glass Bottle Blower Union #12 of Plainfield, Illinois and was affiliated with the Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren and the Lawler Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia M. (Williams) Smith Abel; two children, Jo Ann Williams of Fairmont and John L. Abel Sr. and wife, Debi of Shorewood, IL; three step children, William H. Smith of Boothsville, Robert Brent Smith of Fairmont, and Kathy Slaughter of Franklin, KY; six grandchildren, Janice Schutter, John L. Abel, Jr., Corrie Abel, Janetta W. Green, Michael Williams, John Williams; ten great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Delma Abel and wife, Ethel of Grafton; also survived by several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Irene (Wittman) Abel; his son-in-law, Rev. Dorman L. Williams; one brother, Lloyd Abel; and one sister, Bertha Clark Henderson.
Visitation: Wednesday, March 27, 2013, 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Donald G. Ford Funeral Home in Grafton.
Funeral: Thursday, March 28, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Brent Williams officiating.
Interment: Lawler Cemetery. Military graveside services by the V.F.W. Memorial City Post 3081, Taylor County Post 24 American Legion, D.A.V. Chapter 12 and the Navy Operational Support Center from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
