George Edward Updike, Sr. 89 of Huddleston, VA passed away Friday, March 8, 2013 at Bedford County Nursing Home. He was born on Thursday, March 13, 1924 in Bedford County, a son of the late Edison Updike and Mary Witt Updike. He was also preceded in death his wife, Marian Phyllis Robins Updike. He was a retired employee of the Lane Company and was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church. He was also a veteran of the U. S. Army. Surviving are his daughters, Judy Bates & husband, David of Huddleston, Patricia Gray & husband, John of Bedford; a son, George Updike, Jr., & wife, Rebecca of Bedford; three granddaughters, Tabatha G. Atkinson, Sharon B. Krantz, Angela M. Pinder; three grandsons, Michael W. Gray, David A. Bates, Jr., James Matthew Updike and great-grandchildren, Leeann, Dustin, David III, Jared &, Devin. The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Bethesda United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Claudine Preston, 1355 Preston Mill Road, Huddleston, VA 24104. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Updike Funeral Chapel, Huddleston at 2:00 pm with Rev. Sue Keen & Rev. Wayne Murphy officiating. Interment will follow in Bethesda United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 3 until 5 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Huddleston.
