Hanson George Catlett was born in 1808 in Hagerstown, Maryland to Grandison Catlett and Mary "Polly" Gassaway. In 1832, Hanson married Eleanor Anne Bayne in Prince George's County, Maryland.

Mary Helen Catlett Allen, H. G. Catlett's great granddaughter, and her husband, Jack, had the cenotaph placed in the Texas State Cemetery to honor Catlett's memory and memorialize all that he had done for Texas.
