RCMP Constable Tom Agar was a friendly,
family man who went out of his way
to help people who came to the local
detachment In suburban Vancouver
for assistance.

So when the office door opened
Friday night and a man walked up
to the counter. the 26-year-old
policeman was quickly on his feet.
But Agar met a bullet in the chest
from point-blank range. Police said
it Instantly killed the Montreal native.

Agar‘s death climaxed a night of
terror that left a total of four per-
sons dead. Three others were shot
in a downtown Vancouver hotel
beer parlor.

Another policeman, was shot in the left
leg after trading shots with the gunman,
but managed to slightly wound the attacker
who was arrested.

Stephen Lee LeClair. 34. of Vancouver has
been charged with four counts of first-degree
murder, one charge of attempted murder, two
charges of unlawful confinement and one charge
of unlawful use of a weapon during flight.

Agar lived in nearby Surrey with his ll month-
old daughter, and his wife, who is expecting
their second child in about three weeks. He
had been on the Richmond force for four years.

The victims were identified as
bar manager Anthony Dutklewicz,
53. bartener James McDonald, 35.
and patron Frieda Kardapehl, 72.
Police said a fourth unidentified
man was also in shock after a shot
narrowly missed his face, leaving
powder burns.

The gunman then went to the
Richmond RCMP detachment,
where Agar was shot dead.
"It was one of those unreal
things." said beer parlor witness
Harry Maxted. "My wife thought it
was Halloween firecrackers."
"There was a short bang-bang-
hang sound. We didn't know what
was happening."

The gunman left the beer parlor
and showed up less than 30 minutes
later at the police station. about 20
kilometers south of downtown Van-
couver.

After killing Agar, the gunman
had an exchange of shots the gunman
was wounded and attempted to flee.
Two officers captured the gunman
without a struggle just outside
the detachments front door,
which was shattered by gunfire.
