Mary Francis Baxter was the sixth child born to Asa and Maybelle Chandler Baxter. She was born on July 18, 1918 in Lincoln Parish, Louisiana. At the age of six while she was peeling sugarcane, she accidently put out her left eye. A child she was teased and took every opportunity to encourage children not to be guilty of teasing others.

On October 9, 1937, she married Mack Jack Howard. In the early forties, they moved to Houston, Texas. Mack went to work for the shipyard and later for Armco Steel.

They were the proud parents of Billy Ray (died as birth), Wilbur Ray, Billy Mack, Sarah Maxine, and Earl Cleo Howard. She was a stay-at-home mom. She enjoyed fishing, gardening and making quilts.

Mary died on March 9, 2013.
