Edward Bryant - JOHNSON CITY

Edward Lee Bryant, 79, Johnson City, died comfortably at home Tuesday, January 29, 2013, following a lengthy illness.

Ed was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City.

He was a son of the late Lacy and Viola Prevett Bryant.

Ed was a Sergeant in the United States Army, where he served in the Korean War.

He was a graduate of Science Hill High School and received a B.S. degree from East Tennessee State University.

Ed was an electrical engineer and worked in radio for 43 years. He started his career in 1955 working as an engineer with WJHL Radio. In 1974, he was named Vice-President and Business Manager to Tri-Cities Radio Group, in addition to chief engineer, at which capacity he served until his retirement in 1998.

Radio was not just Ed's job, it was his life, as he was involved in every aspect of the business from the purchase of the property and development of the station to climbing and servicing the towers.

He enjoyed his amateur radio hobby and keeping in touch with his ham radio friends throughout the world, fishing, especially in Bass Tournaments, and playing golf. Ed held the amateur radio callsign W4TJB.

In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Bryant Painter; a grandson, F. Lane Proffitt III; a nephew, Phil Bryant; and lifelong friends, Burton Allison and Rocky Stone.

He is survived by his wife, Irene Chase Bryant, of the home; two daughters, Debra P. Shipley and husband, Burl, and Dianna Bryant McMackin, all of Johnson City; five grandchildren, Dustin Proffitt, Johnson City, Andrea Proffitt, Johnson City, Christopher McMackin, Elizabethton, Wesley Smith, Johnson City, and Erica Painter, Johnson City; one great-grandchild, Skyler McMackin, Elizabethton; one brother, Jack Bryant and wife, Ruby, Cleveland, GA; a niece, Camille Bryant, AZ; a nephew, Jack "Buddy" Bryant, SC.

The family would like to extend a special "thank you" to Sam White and friends of NHC nursing home, Larry Farmer of Caris and Rhonda Martin of Visiting Angels.
