Marine Sgt Reiss was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Reiss' unit had gone back to pick up some wounded soldiers on the outskirts of An Nasiriyah when a grenade exploded in their amphibious attack vehicle.
