Marine Sgt Reiss was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Reiss' unit had gone back to pick up some wounded soldiers on the outskirts of An Nasiriyah when a grenade exploded in their amphibious attack vehicle. They were carrying ammunition which caused a tremendous explosion. His remains were identified on April 11. Brendon loved the water. As a high school student he'd play in a neighbor's swimming pool until his skin was waterlogged. The night before he was to leave for boot camp, he stayed in the water until it got dark. He finished a four-year stint in the military last August but decided to stay on for another year. Brendon had some anxiety about going to Iraq and didn't want to leave his wife, but felt duty-bound to go wherever the Marines sent him.
