Allen Lee Schirmer, 91, of Roanoke, Va., formerly of Kentucky, died Feb. 27, 2005, at the Veterans Hospital in Salem, Va.

He was born in Milton, Ky. August 30, 1913, the son of H.H. and Grace Ogden Schirmer. He was raised in Milton and also lived in Carrollton, Ky., and Frankfort, Ky. He was of the Methodist faith. He was a World War II veteran and received a Purple Heart. He had a career in the printing and newspaper business, and was associated with The News Democrat in Carrollton, Ky., the Kentucky Standard in Bardstown, Ky., and the State Journal in Frankfort, Ky.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Jane T. (Tuttle) Schirmer; one son, H.A. "Deke" Schirmer of Roanoke, Va.; one daughter, Rebecca S. Holmes of Roanoke, Va.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Mildred S. Ayer.

Graveside services and burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday March 6, 2005, at Moffett Cemetery in Milton, Ky. The body was cremated.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Milton United Methodist Church, 11100 U.S. 421 N, Milton, KY 40045.
