MGySgt Richard "Dick" Allen Acosta, U.S.M.C. Ret., husband of Joan "Joni" V. (Thom) Acosta of Beaufort, SC, died January 20, 2013 in BayView Manor.
Mr. Acosta was born June 7, 1939 in Birmingham, Al, son of Helene (Acosta) Kramer of Atlanta, GA and the late William Walter Acosta of Pensacola, FL.
Upon leaving high school, Dick joined the United States Marines on November 4, 1956 making it his career. After 31 years of service he retired on June 1, 1987.
During his tour with the marines, Dick enjoyed traveling and camping with his wife Joni of 38 years, and being in the local rivers shrimping with his friends.
Making Beaufort, SC their home in 1980 and upon retiring he worked for the US Postal Service, however, he never forgot the Marines and other service members he loved. He continued to be a voice for all veterans, past, present and future with the local military organizations. As a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Jess C. Gregg Post 8760 and Military Order of the Cootie, PupTent #1 Post 8760 (Honor Degree of VFW) he served in different positions from Post Commander, Quartermaster, District #1 Commander and State Commander of the Military Order of the Cooties, also a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, James H. Leach, Chapter 1948, American Veterans Post # 70, Disabled American Veterans, Chapter #12, all of the Beaufort area.
The family will receive friends Friday, January 25, 2013 from 10:30 A.M – 12:30 P.M. at Anderson Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at 1 PM at Beaufort National Cemetery with Marine honors.
