John was born on Oct. 15, 1822 in Orange County, North Carolina, to James Wright Russell (1792-1844) & Nancy Johnston Russell (1798-1843).

Having moved to Bowie County, Texas in 1842, he went to San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas at the outbreak of the Mexican War where he enlisted in Captain (later Colonel) Walter P. Lane's company of Major Mike Chevalier's battalion of Texas Rangers and served until the end of the war.

He married Cynthia W. Bradford (1837-1861) on Aug. 9, 1854, in Bonham, Fannin County, TX. Her parents were James Fitch Bradford (1802-1892) & Martha Davis (1806-1892). John & Cynthia had two children, Martha "Matti" Russell (1856-1856; grave unknown) & James Bradford Russell (1856-1931). Cynthia died in 1861 at age 24.

In 1861, John. R. Russell entered the Confederate Army and was elected captain of a company in Alexander's regiment, and afterwards major, then lieutenant colonel. He served in this capacity until his resignation in 1863 due to lung hemorrhages and poor health. He served as lieutenant colonel of the 34th Texas Cavalry in Texas, Indian Territory, and Missouri, under Generals Cooper and Albert Pike.

John married his first wife's older sister, Margaret Comstock Bradford Tender (1830-1917) on Jan. 21, 1864, in Bonham, Fannin County, TX. This was a second marriage for both. John & Margaret had two children, John William Russell (1865-1925) & Mary Cynthia Russell Steger (1869-1940).

John Rogers Russell died on Aug. 29, 1881.
