He was attacked by a US Army soldier at Camp Pennsylvania in Kuwait on March 22, 2003, when Sgt Hasan Akbar threw grenades into the tent where Maj Stone was sleeping. He suffered 83 shrapnel wounds and died of his wounds a few days after the attack. He enlisted in the Air Force soon after high school graduation and trained as an aircraft in-flight refueling operator in KC-135's. He received a bachelor's degree in business administration with a minor in Russian studies from Oregon State University in 1988 and a master's degree in human resource management in 1994. He left military service in 2000, but became an Air National Guardsman. After 20 years, he was hoping to retire soon and move close to his dad in Idaho.
He was survived by his mother and step-father; his father and step-mother; his fiancee; his two sons; one sister; and three half-brothers.
Interment on April 17, 2003.
NOTE: Maj Stone's attacker was found guilty of two counts of premeditated murder and three counts of attempted murder in a grenade and rifle attack. The military jury sentenced him to death.
