Obituary:
Lifelong Petoskey resident, Jerolene J. Brown (Fochtman) died on March 1, 2008, at Grandview Care Facility, East Jordan.
Jerry was born April 11, 1922 in Petoskey, the daughter of the late Wilbert and Myrtle Fochtman. She attended St. Francis Grade School, graduated from Petoskey High School in 1939, and then attended Michigan State University.
On Dec. 29, 1942, Jerry married Lewis E. Brown at St. Francis Xavier Church, Petoskey. Lewis preceded Jerry in death on May 6, 1995.
Jerry's life centered on her family and her community. She was an excellent seamstress and cook who delighted in perfecting new recipes. She volunteered many years at St. Francis School and Northern Michigan Regional Hospital. An avid card player, Jerry enjoyed playing cards with her family and friends and in area bridge marathons. She enjoyed golf and was a member of the Petoskey Bay View Country Club. In recent years, visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren filled her with much delight and joy.
Jerry is survived by seven children: Sister Mary Noel Brown, Fond du Lac, Wis.; Barbara (Fred) Malpass, East Jordan; Kerri Beth Kerrigan and Margaret Loodeen, Midland; Steve (Holly) Brown, Petoskey; Teresa, LaGrange Park, IL; and Erik (Meredith), Petoskey. She is further survived by 12 grandchildren: Andrew (Sarah) Malpass and James (Brandy) Malpass, East Jordan; Katie (Matthew) McLeod, Portland, Ore.; Suzi Malpass, Chicago; Daryl Johnson, Fairfax, Calif.; Paul Loodeen, Kalamazoo; Sarah (Toby) Ogle, Coconut Grove, Fla.; Katrina Brown, Washington, D.C.; Ben Brown, East Lansing; and Derrick, Micah, and Zach Brown, Petoskey. Jerry also leaves six great-grandchildren: Madeline, Mason, Ryder and Preston Malpass; Brittany Johnson; and Colette McLeod. Jerry is also survived by two sisters, Noel Greenwell and Molly (Tom) Walenta, Petoskey, and a sister-in-law Cecil Fochtman, Grand Rapids. Jerry was preceded in death by siblings Thomas Fochtman and Marjorie Swantek.
Visitation will be at Stone Funeral Home, Petoskey, 6-8 p.m., today, Monday, March 3, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, at St. Francis Xavier Church, Petoskey. Internment will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Jerolene and Lewis Brown Fund of the Petoskey-Harbor Community Foundation or St. Francis Church.
