Gordon Lyle Erickson, 78, Bismarck, passed away peacefully on Dec. 23, 2007, at St. Vincent Care Center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. for friends at Bismarck Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to the service.
Gordie was born July 11, 1929, in Driscoll, to Carl and Olga (Peterson) Erickson. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from school at Driscoll High School. He joined the U.S. Army and served overseas during the Korea War from 1949 to 1953, near an area infamously known as "Heartbreak Ridge." While in service, he received the Korean Service Medal and the UN Service Medal and had been a member of the AMVETS and a lifelong member of the VFW. Upon his honorable discharge as sergeant, Gordie returned home where he met Viola Gall. They married on Aug. 2, 1953, at Zion Lutheran Church, Bismarck.
Gordie used the training he learned on the family farm and in the military and spent 9½ years working as a parts man for Ward Motor Co. on East Main. He eventually used his skills to work construction, until his retirement. However, both Vi and Sharon can attest that his love to build and fix things continued throughout his life, especially if he had a chance to use tape or baling wire. More than his passion to tinker and fix was his love of horses. He was one of the founding members of the Bismarck Horse Club and a member of the Badlands Trail Riders and the Bismarck Mounted Police. His skills were respected by many for his ability to handle and show horses like Jim Dandy Dial and take them to the winners circle or to a Badlands Trail Ride.
Gordie spent time, whenever possible, talking to friends, acquaintances or just about anybody he'd meet about horses, International tractors, or sometimes about the old friends and times in Driscoll and Bismarck. He was an outgoing person and could strike up a conversation with any stranger he'd meet. His recollections and memories of the earlier days were extremely colorful and entertaining.
Surviving Gordie are his wife of 54 years, Viola "Vi"; his daughter and her husband, Steve and Sharon Krentz, Baldwin; his two sisters and their husbands, Rosalie and Herb Fried and their children and Colleen and Ardean Aafedt and their children, and his sister-in-law, Joyce Erickson and her children.
Preceding Gordie in death, were his parents, Carl and Olga (Peterson) Erickson, and his brother, Keith "Skeeter" Erickson.
