Born Wednesday, May 24, 1944 in Higginsville, Missouri, he was the son of Elmer Gilkey and Hattie Booker Gilkey.
He worked as an assembler at several sheltered workshops and lived most of his life in Higginsville, moving to Gladstone in 1984 for several years. His last residence was in Lee's Summit. Larry was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Higginsville. He was never married.
Surviving are three brothers, Jim Gilkey of Concordia, Missouri, Jerry Lee Gilkey of the state of Nevada, and George "Mac" Gilkey of Higginsville; four sisters, Betty Draper of Blue Springs, Missouri, Sarah Thee of Independence, Missouri, Judy (Lesley) Borgstadt of Aullville, Missouri and Juanita Sue Caps of Gladstone, Missouri.
Preceding in death are his parents, two brothers, James E. Gilkey and Robert Gilkey; six sisters, Marie Andrews, Margie Doak, Doris Dumas, Helen Folsom, Evelyn Hill, and Mary Lou Gassen.
A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 15, 2011 at Hoefer Chapel, 1600 Main in Higginsville with Brother Nathan Goring officiating. Inurnment will follow the service at the Higginsville City Cemetery.
