Lewis M. LaDuke, veteran soldier, and citizen of Eskridge, Kansas, for the past four years, died at his home at the east of town Sunday morning 4 May 1924 at 10 a.m. following an illness of two weeks. He was not in good health, however, for the past year. Mr. LaDuke was born 20 Mar. 1842 at Ft. Covington, Franklin county, New York. He was 82 years, 1 month and 14 days old. At the age of 17 he went to Medina, OH., where he worked on a farm until the outbreak of the Civil when he enlisted in the Third Ohio Cavalry, serving for three years in the war. During the period of his war service, he was taken prisoner and held in Libby prison for six months, where he endured all the horrors of that infamous prison. At the close of the war he returned to Medina, Ohi, where he lived for several years and on 5 Aug. 1867 he was united in marriage to Lorinda Granger Hart, the ceremony taking place in Norwalk, Ohio, where they lived until 1868, and then with his wife he moved to Wabaunsee County, Kansas. He took a homestead 8 miles northwest of Eskridge, Kansas, and lived there until 31 Mar. 1913 when he moved to Iowa, and lived there for seven years, returning to Eskridge on 9 Apr 1919, living here until his death. Unto this union was born five children: Mrs. Lee Padden, Edgemont, S.D.; Mrs. Merta Tucker, Eskridge, KS; Louis B. LaDuke, Van Buren, MO.: Ray LaDuke and Josie E. LaDuke. The last two children, with their mother, preceded Mr. LaDuke to the Great Beyond. The wife and mother died 1 Dec. 1887, and Mr. LaDuke was married again on 15 July 1889 to Ida Alzada Daugherty (1858 - 1947) of Topeka, Kansas. To this union were born: Mrs. Hope Joy Zeferjohn; Mrs. May Loren Stadley and Mrs. Hazel Gilbert, all living in Topeka, Kansas.; Mrs. Carl Peterson of Montrose, Iowa.; Isaac J. LaDuke of Ft. William McKinley, Philippine Islands; James Henry LaDuke of Eskridge, Kansas. He leaves to mourn his wife, 9 children, 32 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He was one of the early settlers of this county and shared the hardships of the old pioneers. The funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at the late home, conducted by the Rev. J. B. Mackenzie of the M. E. church. Burial was made in the Mission View Cemetery.
