DAVENPORT -- Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for George D. "Lonesome" Ramirez, 72, a resident of Davenport, will be 10 a.m. Monday, February 18, 2013, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 2626 Boise Ave., Davenport. Burial will take place in Holy Family Cemetery, Davenport, with military honors provided by Vietnam Veterans of America 299. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 until 4 p.m. at Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, downtown Davenport, with a prayer service being offered at 2 p.m. George passed away at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, after an extended illness. George fought long and hard for life, but it was not to be. God needed him home.
George was born on March 11, 1940, in Davenport, a son of Ycidro and Maria (Perez) Ramirez. He attended Davenport schools. George served his country in the Army, and was stationed in Germany. Due to injuries he sustained while stationed in Germany, he received an honorable medical discharge, ending his dreams and ambitions for a military career.
George graduated from the Davenport Barber College and worked briefly for a local barber shop. As a teen, he shined shoes at the Security Hat Shop. He had also been employed at the Ponderosa Steak House, International Harvester, Farmall Plant, Rock Island J.C. Penney's warehouse, custodian at the YMCA, and a maintenance supervisor at the Econo Lodge.
George was a member of P.O.E., Eagles, Loyal Order of the Moose, and League of United Latin American Citizens 10. He served on the Citi Bus Transit Authority. George either rode the bus or walked to see what was going on or new in his city, the "Q.C.A."
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.
George will be greatly missed by his brothers, Alcadio Ramirez, Hoffman Estates, Ill., John Ramirez, Joe (Marie) Ramirez, and Lupe (Sharon) Ramirez, and sisters, Celia "Sally" Rangel and Aurora "Jonnie" Schroder, all of Davenport; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
George was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Rosa Vorhauer, brothers, Gregory and Jesse "the Hawk" Ramirez, and a nephew, Alferedo Rangel. May they rest in peace.
