D. Haywood was born in Supply, Randolph County, Arkansas, and grew up there. He was the third of thirteen (seven boys and six girls).

He married Lucinda Redwine on 4 Jan 1879, in Ripley County, Missouri . They made their home in Maynard, Randolph County, where their first child was born in November of 1879. They remained in Maynard until around 1894 and then moved back to Supply. Their 9th child was born in 1898 in Maynard.

By 1910, they were living in Gallegos, Union County, New Mexico, but by 1920 they were living in Hudson, Quay County, New Mexico. By 1930, they had moved to Tucumcari, which is also in Quay County, and remained there until his death in 1935 at the age of 78. He died of colon cancer.

He and Lucinda had nine children:

2) Jesse Lovelace (1881-1920)
3) Travis Leonidos (1883-1970)
4) Drury Haywood, Jr (1885-1886)
5) Isaac Horace (1888-1975)
6) Anna Bell (1890-1890)
7) Mary Elizabeth "Molly" (1891-1932)
8) Lou Emma (1894-1992)
9) Roy Hawkins (1898-1916)
