Author, Motion Picture Screenwriter. Much of his fiction is set in the southern and Asiatic regions of Russia. His novel "Happiness" (1946) describes a wounded soldier's homecoming in the Crimea after World War II. It won a Stalin Prize in 1947. Pavlenko's screenplays include a coauthor credit for Sergei Eisenstein's classic film "Alexander Nevsky" (1938), "The Vow" (1946), and "The Fall of Berlin" (1949). He was born in St. Petersburg and served as a Red Army commissar during the Russian Civil War. In the 1920's he helped re-establish trade between the Soviet Union and France, Italy, Greece, and Turkey. Pavlenko made his literary debut in 1930 and managed to produce interesting work within the confines of Socialist Realism. He died of a heart attack after appearing as a actor in "The Composer Glinka" (released in 1952), a biopic he also wrote.
