He was the third Bishop of the Diocese of Worcester, Massachusetts, succeeding Bishop Bernard J. Flanagan. He was born to Maurice and Mary (Courtney) Harrington. His parents came to the United States from County Kerry, Ireland at the turn of the century. He was survived by a sister, Sister Nora Harrington, S.S.J., vice president of Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee, and a brother, Msgr. John F. Harrington, P.A., retired pastor of Holy Cross Parish in Hoylyoke and former chancellor of the Diocese of Springfield. He was the sixth of seven children. The first, Ella, died when she was eight months old. Then came John, now Msgr. John J. Harrington; the late Thomas E. Harrington; the late Miss Mary V. Harrington; the late Mrs. Margaret Harrington Marrion; and Sister Nora Harrington, S.S.J.
