Savannah - Dr. Frederick Emmett Ducey, Jr., D.V.M., died Thursday, November 17, 2011 at the age of 86.

Dr. Ducey was born in Savannah, GA on April 3, 1925, the son of Frederick Emmett Ducey, Sr., D.V.M. and Murrell Elizabeth Ellington Ducey. Dr. Ducey was allowed to graduate early in 1943 from Savannah High School to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served as a Navigator during World War II; attended Auburn University for 1 year and in 1950 graduated in the first class of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia. He moved to Ridgeland, SC in June, 1950 where he practiced Veterinary Medicine for 61 years.

While president of the Ridgeland Jaycees, he started it's Pony League baseball program, was instrumental in building the first Little League Baseball Park, coached T-Ball, baseball, football, basketball and golf youth programs. He was a founding member of the Sergeant Jasper Country Club. He served on the Ridgeland Town Council and was Mayor Pro-tem for 5 years and Mayor for 8 years. He was a founding member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and a member of the Antonions. In 1994, Dr. Ducey was presented the Award of Excellence by the Jasper County Rotary Club; in 2004, he was honored with a House Resolution by the State of South Carolina House of Representatives; in 2010 an award from the Jasper Animal Rescue Mission and a street was named after him. In 2011, he received the Sergeant Jasper Award from the Jasper County Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Ducey was an avid Outdoorsman and loved his Georgia Bulldogs.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margaret Anderson Ducey, three sons, Frederick E. (Tonya Joiner) Ducey, III of Columbia, SC; Thomas Monroe (Jacqui Lewis) Ducey of Ashboro, NC; John Patrick (Mary Topping) Ducey of Naples, FL; one daughter, Barbara Anne (Rufus E) Weaver of Bluffton, SC; brother, James E. Ducey, D.V.M. of Savannah, GA; nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Emma Louise Ducey; sister, Martha Ducey Clutts and brother, Robert Emmett Ducey. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, November 19, 2011 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Ridgeland with interment in the Ridgeland Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5 until 7 on Friday, November 18, 2011 at Sauls Funeral Home with a Rosary service beginning at 7:00 pm. Sauls Funeral Home, Ridgeland, SC (www.saulsfh.com).
