Scientist. Born Marvel Whiteside Parsons, but called Jack from birth (and later John by his mother); he was a pioneer of rocket science, well-known for his work in developing both solid- and liquid-fuelled rockets at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He assisted development of JATO technology for United States Military during World War II, and was a co-founder of Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). No less a figure than Werner von Braun named Parsons "the father of the American space program." Parsons also had a colorful private life as a bohemian and occultist. He was British occult mage Aleister Crowley's representative in California, and headed the local lodge of the Ordo Templi Orientis. Performed a series of magical workings with a young L. Ron Hubbard, who ended up stealing Parsons' wife and money. A crater on the dark side of the moon is named after Parsons.
