Guy T. Crippen, 60, Famous Harness Race Driver, is Dead
DARLINGTON, Wis. — Guy T. Crippen, 60, nationally known harness race driver and horse trainer. died early Sunday at Lafayette County Memorial Hospital here.
A victim of throat cancer, Crippen became ill several months ago while racing in New York state and was flown to the Mayo Clinic at. Rochester, Minn. There he was first told he had the disease. Later he was brought to Darlington, his birthplace, and entered the hospital here several weeks ago.
Crippen, the son of Ernest Crippin a well-known trainer in his day, grew up in the midst of harness racing and trained and raced houses of owners all over the country.
A driver, on the Grand Circuit for many years. Crippen piloted Mainliner, owned by Ralph Kroening of Milwaukee, to victory in the Hambletonian at Goshen N. Y., in 1951.
Four years ago he was at the reins when G. W. Spencer, owned by a Beaver Dam doctor, ran second in a $50,000 harness feature race at Santa Anita.
Crippen is survived by his wife, Bernice, a brother, Jay Crippen, Milwaukee, who was associated with him in training horses, and a sister, Mrs. John Kirkpatrick, Darlington.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Tuesday at the Darlington Methodist Church, with burial in Union Grove Cemetery/ The body is at the Sharer Funeral Home.

Even though the obituary states that Guy's father was Ernest, all of the records regarding this family indicate his name to have been Emmet Rufus Crippen. Guy's parents married in 1881 and were divorced by the 1905 WI State census. Then they married for a second time in 1906.
