Veronica, the daughter of Johann and Cecilia (Butcher) Matyjasek, was born and raised in the City of Niagara Falls, New York with her three brothers and one sister.

Veronica was known as Ronnie. She hated the name Veronica. Ronnie told her daughter, Barbara that she would haunt her after she died, if she named any of her children after her. She was very petite and had beautiful red hair.

Ronnie and her siblings had a rough childhood. Her father was an alcoholic and was physically abusive to the family. One brother was beaten by Ronnie’s father, when the father was drunk, and the brother later died of his injuries. Ronnie’s Mother helped women and young girls who were in a family way. Ronnie would help her Mother. Ronnie’s Mother died at the age of 39 from a miscarriage.

After the death of her Mother, Ronnie and her sister were sent to an orphanage in Buffalo, New York run by the nuns. Her brothers must have been old enough to live by themselves or lived with the father. The nuns gave Ronnie and her sister a fresh start in the orphanage by giving them a new first name. The girls were sent to Nardin High School which was where the wealthy families of Buffalo sent their children. Her classmates called her Mattie. Ronnie never talked about her childhood, family or where they lived. The family was not thought of very well in the neighborhood, but the women and young girls who were pregnant secretly sought help from Ronnie’s Mother. Ronnie kept her family name a secret. She never told anyone. She was mortified to tell anyone in fear of them finding out about her family.

Ronnie’s real birthday is February 28th, not July 28th. She saw her birthday written in Polish (Luty) and thought it read July. Ronnie always celebrated her birthday in July. She found out it was really in February when she applied for Social Security Retirement.

Ronnie married Steve Borowicz on September 28, 1939. Ronnie and Steve lived in the attic when they were first married at 1770 Welch Avenue. Together they raised three children in the City of Niagara Falls, New York. Barbara and Richard grew up together at 1770 Welch Avenue. Later Dennis grew up with his siblings at 1906 Niagara Street, 2323 Orleans Avenue and back to 1770 Welch Avenue (but not in the attic).

Ronnie worked as ‘Rosie the Riveter’ during World War II at the Bell Airplane Plant in Wheatfield, New York. Later Ronnie worked the night shift at Hooker Chemical Company in Niagara Falls, New York on the cleaning crew in the offices.

Ronnie was devoted to her family, especially her children. She loved to design and sew her own clothes. Ronnie also loved to cook and bake. Anytime you stopped at Ronnie’s house there was always food cooking on the stove or in the oven and coffee brewing on the stove. Ronnie liked to draw in pencil freehand, play cards, read the movie star gossip papers and watching late night British television. Ronnie always had a cup of coffee in one hand and a cigarette in the other. Her favorite color was green.

Ronnie died of a heart attack in her home recuperating from colostomy surgery at 269 15th Street in the City of Niagara Falls, New York.

Rest in Sweet Peace.
