Fr. Santitoro is preceded in death by his brother, Alfonse Santitoro, one niece, Susann Rocco and one nephew, Domenick Rocco, Jr. He is survived by his sisters, Ann and her husband Andrea "Andy" Vispetti Sr. Raphael Santitoro, Frances Rocco, Marie Santitoro and Lucy Pavlov; his uncles, Anthony and his wife Virginia Zuno and Augustine and his wife Gail Zuno; his nephews, Anthony and Joseph Vispetti, and many other nieces and nephews.
He prepared for the priesthood at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Darlington, and was ordained May 28, 1966 in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton by Bishop George W. Ahr. As a young priest, Fr. Santitoro served in a number of parishes throughout the Trenton Diocese. His first assignment was in Holy Trinity Parish, Long Branch, he then spent time in St. Ann, Raritan; St. Martha, Point Pleasant; and St. John, Lakehurst. Fr. Santitoro also helped to bring other men into the priesthood. He served in the role of Hunterdon County vocational director from 1970-1973 and was then appointed vocations director of Monmouth County. He was the chaplain for the Italian American National Hall of Fame.
Fr. Santitoro was soon after appointed temporary administrator, and pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Parish, Hightstown. During his time at St. Anthony of Padua, he was chaplain of the Hightstown Court #2196 of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. He was appointed to the Diocesan Expansion Commission in 1999.
Bishop John C. Reiss chose Fr. Santitoro to establish a parish that would serve the growing number of retirement villages in Toms River and Berkeley Township. On Aug. 30, 1985, Fr. Santitoro became the founding pastor of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, Berkeley Twp. and has overseen the growth and development of the community ever since. Fr. Santitoro retired as pastor of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in September of 2011.
The family will receive relatives and friends for Rite of Reception. Viewing will be until the mass which will be officiated by Rev. Fr. Jeffrey E. Lee and will be at Our Lady of the Angels Parish St. Joachim 20-56 Butler St. Trenton, NJ. An evening viewing will follow at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, 130 St. Maximilian Lane, Toms River, NJ. The funeral mass will be officiated by Msgr. Thomas N. Gervasio at at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, Berkeley Twp., NJ. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Toms River, NJ. The Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 145 St. Catherine Blvd., Toms River, NJ is in charge of the arrangements.
