"Tome" Smith enlisted in the Confederate Army on November 26, 1861, at Camp Trousdale, Sumner County, Tennessee. He served in Company G, 41st Regt Tennessee Infantry as a Private; later promoted to the rank of 2nd Sergeant. On February 16, 1862, he was captured at Fort Donalson and was a prisoner of war at Camp Morton, Indiana. Records indicate that he remained a prisoner until August 28, 1862. He was later sent to Vicksburg, Mississippi, and exchanged. His promotion to Sergeant was effective September 30, 1863.

His grandson, General John Morgan Smith, recalled hearing from his father, John Morgan Smith, that Tome hunted and trapped animals for their furs. He also did carpentry work and made and sold whiskey from a still he owned. During the time he was a distiller, the family lived in what was known at various times as Tome Hollow and Honey Hollow, located near Lexie, Franklin County, Tennessee.
