Mary Esther Romer Chavis

Mrs. Mary Esther Romer Chavis, age 93, of Fernandina Beach, FL passed away Friday morning, October 5, 2012 at the Morris Center in Jacksonville.

Mrs. Chavis was born on March 1, 1919 in Lawrence, KS, the daughter of the late Mary Adrian Geiger Carney and Ewart G. Carney, Sr. She graduated High School in Waco, TX and has been a resident of Fernandina Beach since the early '80's. Mrs. Chavis was instrumental in forming the Barnabas Center in Fernandina Beach. She was a member of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Chavis was predeceased by her first husband, Robert Romer, in 1984 and a brother, Frank Carney.

She leaves behind her husband of 21 years, Elisha Jordan Chavis, of Fernandina Beach. Her daughter Peggy Brandt (Stephen) of Austin, TX, her step-children, Jerry Wayne Chavis Oxendine of Coral Springs, FL and David Parrish Overstreet Chavis of NJ. Her brother, Ewart G. "Kemp" Carney, Jr. Two sisters, Barbarajean Phillips and Polly Luther, both of Austin, TX, her grandchildren, Nicholas, Casey, Norman, and Crystal. Two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today at 11:00 am in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Home with Pastor Ida Iverson, officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time.

If so desired, memorials may be made in her name to the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 2600 Atlantic Ave, Fernandina Beach, FL 32034.
