WEBSTER -Rose M. (Sterczala) Sabaj, age 91, formerly of Lake Street, died peacefully Monday, August 24, 2009 at Lanessa Extended Care. Her beloved husband of 57 years, Charles M. Sabaj, died in 2000.

She is survived by her beloved and dedicated daughter Joanne Carpenter and her husband Ralph of Vernon, CT; they shared many wonderful times together. She also leaves her adoring grandchildren, Dr. Michelle Carpenter of Fayetteville, NC and Mark Carpenter and his wife Judy of Wallingford, CT; they were the pride of her life. She will be missed by her nieces and nephews, especially her godchildren Barbara Shead and Theresa Marco. She was preceded in death by her beloved son Joseph E. Sabaj in 2004, as well as by her four brothers, Anthony, Joseph, Thomas and Frank Sterczala and by her six sisters, Helen Jaskolski, Anna Latour, Veronica Gracyalny, Theresa Zachara Tadla, Cecelia Wojciechowski and Lucy Dziezenski.

She was born on April 8, 1918 in Webster, one of the 11 children of Thomas and Cecelia (Bury) Stercala and was a lifelong resident.

Mrs. Sabaj worked at Cluett-Peabody Mills in North Grosvenordale, CT, as a weaver. She was then an inspector at the American Optical Company in Southbridge. In her later years she worked for Webster Shoe and at Stevens Linen Associates in Dudley.

She was a communicant of Saint Joseph Basilica and a member of its Holy Rosary Sodality. She was a former member of the St. Joseph Polish Women's Club. She will be remembered for her loyalty and dedication to her family.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Lanessa Extended Care for their compassionate care for Rose during her short stay there.

The funeral will be held Friday, August 28, from the Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School Street, with a Mass at 11:00 AM in St. Joseph Basilica, 53 Whitcomb St. Burial will be in St. Joseph Garden of Peace. A calling period will be from 9:15 to 10:15 AM Friday, August 28, in the funeral home. Donations in her memory may be made to Lanessa Extended Care, 751 School Street, Webster, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
