Roman Catholic Cardinal. Born into one of the most noble families of Bologna, he completed his academic training in theology, philosophy at the University of Bologna in 1883. Later in 1886 he obtained a 'in utroque jure' doctorate. He was appointed priest for the Archdiocese of Bologna, May 14, 1880, becoming a professor at the local seminary as well as spiritual director of seminarians (1894-1899). 'Canonico onorario del Capitolo Cattedrale' of the metropolitan cathedral since 1885, he assumed the primicerius in 1892. In 1899 he was appointed Honorary Prelate, and September 13 of the same year he was sent as counselor at the Nunciature in France in the service of Cardinal Benedetto Lorenzelli, with whom he did his best to help and assistance to the Italian emigrants in Paris. On 22 June 1903 he was elected bishop of Loreto and Recanati by Pope Leo XIII. He was consecrated on 12 July in Rome and began his work at the diocese on 8 December of the following year. During the eight years he followed the growth of the cult in the Basilica, and acted decisively against the abuses and injustices, causes for which he was repeatedly threatened with death. He was also commissioned by Pope Pius X in a delicate mission with Don Romolo Murri, in the years of disagreement between the Vatican and the political Catholicism. On 27 November 1911 he was elevated by Pope St. Pius X to 'Titular Bishop' of Tiro, and three days after appointed 'The Honorary prelate of His Holiness.' During the consistory of December 4, 1916 Pope Benedict XV elevated him to the rank of cardinal, with the title of Santa Prisca. On June 9, 1919, the same Benedict XV appointed him protector of the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of St. George.
