FAYETTEVILLE - Elvin Edwin "Ed" Ward Sr., 78, of Fayetteville, died Friday, May 22, 2009, in Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Fayetteville.
He was born March 19, 1931, in Whitesville, W.Va. He grew up in Logan, W.Va.

Ed was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. In the late '50s, he was a first sergeant in the 82nd Airborne Signal Corps. In the early '60s, he taught electronics at Fort Monmouth Army Electronics School. The last five years of his military career were spent in the Air Force.
After retiring from the military, he taught AFJROTC and electronics at Pinecrest High School in Southern Pines, until he became paralyzed in 1985.

He lived in Pinebluff, for 20 years until moving to Holden Beach. He entered the VA Medical Center in 2004, and lived there until his death.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville.

Graveside services with military honors will be held at noon Wednesday, May 27, 2009, in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.

He is survived by his wife of 54 happy years, Sue Ward; a daughter, Debbie Wilson and husband Raymond; two sons, Ed Ward Jr. and wife Toni, and David Ward and wife Sheila; two grandchildren, Megan and Ian; a brother; and four sisters.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Brunswick Isle Baptist Church, 1672 Mount. Pisgah Road SW, Supply, NC 28462; or to Phoenix Masonic Lodge No. 8, Fayetteville NC 28301. Arrangements by Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home of Fayetteville.
