Born in South Amboy, NJ he resided in South River for many years before moving to Spotswood 30 years ago. Prior to his retirement in 1982, he was an Ironworker with Ironworkers Local 373 in Perth Amboy. He had a wholesale egg business in Englishtown in the 1960's, where he also raised Shetland Ponies. He was the owner of Apples Aviary & Supply Company, was a pigeon breeder and flyer, and was a champion budgie (parakeet) breeder and exhibitor. He was an avid skydiver, having jumped over 1000 times, and was also a skydiver instructor, pilot and competitive judge. He raced cars for Laffin Chevrolet at Old Bridge Raceway, and at other East Coast race tracks. He was a member of the Pigeon Clubs of Perth Amboy, Sayreville, Middlesex and Bound Brook, and was the founder of the Tri State Budgerigar Society in 1984. A Navy Veteran of the Korean War, he was awarded a purple heart for injuries sustained.
He was predeceased by his parents, George S. Applegate, Jr., a noted State Prosecutor, and Amelia Schack Applegate, former South River Postmaster. Surviving are his wife, Marie "Janet" Urewich Halbert Applegate; three sons, George Applegate IV and his companion Gerri of Spotswood, Robert "Bobby" Applegate of Monroe Township, and James Halbert III and his wife Marcia of Spotswood; two daughters, Susan Sheridan Applegate of Largo, FL and Christine Halbert Williams and her husband Henry of South River; ten grandchildren, Joanne, George V, Henry Jr. "Roscoe", Royale "Sissy", Andrew "AJ", Emily, Bobby, Zoe, Victoria, and Pamela "Pammie"; and four great grandchildren, Michael, Peyton, Ameija and Tyler.
Funeral services will be held at Rezem Funeral Home, 457 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick, NJ. Interment with military honors will follow at Washington Monumental Cemetery, South River, NJ.
