parents Glover and Mabel Vaughn Hunt, wife Eleanor Belle, brother Charles and Richard Julian Hunt
William "Billy" Floyd Hunt, Sr., 87, passed away on Friday, January 11, 2013. Billy was born in Castalia, NC on January 15, 1925, son of the late Glover and Mabel Vaughn Hunt. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eleanor Belle, and two brothers, Charles and Richard Julian Hunt.
Daddy was a buyer on the tobacco market with Export Leaf Tobacco Company and later, Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company. He and his dear friend, Sambo Drake, were co-owners of an awning service during the tobacco off-season. He retired from Brown & Williamson in the 1970s. Later, Momma and Daddy, along with friends, Donald and Flora Clayton, opened The Picture Frame Shoppe at Peddlers Village. At the urging of Momma and their friends, Daddy began building outdoor benches and later furniture for our home. With no formal training, Daddy could look at a picture and build some of the most beautiful furniture. Mr. Moore, a well-known furniture maker in Rocky Mount, and Daddy became friends. Daddy would spend hours working at Mr. Moores shop learning and helping him. Daddy was so proud of his work and we were all amazed to see the beds, tables, chests, and mirrors he could turn out. Friends and family from all over the South have the honor of owning one of his Chippendale mirrors.
Daddy also delighted in participating in activities at Englewood United Methodist Church, cooking peanuts and, most especially, cooking Brunswick stew for the Annual Yard Sales. We can only hope he left someone the recipe.
He is survived by his daughter, Debbie Ladd and her husband, Rick; two sons, Floyd Hunt, Garland Hunt and his wife, Sandra; six grandchildren, Kyle Ladd and his wife, Jennifer, Allison Ladd, all of Raleigh, NC, Warren Hunt of Rocky Mount, NC, Grace Hunt, a student at NC Wesleyan, Mary Kathryn Hunt, a graduate student at University of Mississippi and Chad Hunt, a student at The Citadel.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be made to Englewood United Methodist Church, PO Box 7128, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 10:00-11:30am on Monday, January 14, 2013 at Englewood United Methodist Church and other times at the home of Debbie Ladd. A service to remember Billy will follow the visitation at 11:30am at the church. Burial will follow the service at Pineview Cemetery.
Arrangements entrusted to Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home, 1130 N. Winstead Avenue, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.
