El Paso County Detention Officer Cesar Arreola, 37, died early Sunday after falling ill Saturday, according to an El Paso County Sheriff's Office news release.

At about 9 a.m. Saturday, Arreola was participating in tryouts for the Special Reaction Team. He completed the assessment when he began feeling a shortness of breath and feeling light headed. Medical staff on site began treating him and he was later transported to Sierra-Providence East where he remained until early this morning. Arreola died at about 5 a.m. Sunday. A cause of death was not released by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.

The Special Reaction Team is used to control unruly prisoners or quell potential riots at the county's detention facilities.

Arreola, a 14-month veteran of the Sheriff's Office, graduated at the top of his Detention Officer class in November 2007. He also was a Gulf War veteran and an active volunteer for Virgen Guadalupe Catholic Church.
