CHAPMANVILLE, W.Va. — Mrs. Alice Andersen Adams, 90, of Chapmanville, was born July 4, 1921, at Stanton, Mich., a daughter of the late Ejnar and Selma Andersen. She departed this life Thursday, January 26, 2012, at Trinity Healthcare Services of Logan.
Alice attended Nevins Lake Grade School, then Stanton Union High, graduating as Valedictorian in 1939. After high school, she attended the county normal training which qualified her to teach a rural school. She taught in two different communities and continued her education with summer courses. Alice attended Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill., to complete her degree. In 1946, she became a member of the Southern Highland Evangel Mission. Along with her sister, Marian, she arrived at Pitt Branch on Crawley Creek on October 31, 1946. They came to visit the rural schools of Logan and Lincoln counties to teach Bible lessons on a weekly basis. Summer times included working at Camp Evangel for children who had earned a week at camp by learning Scripture verses.
Sundays were spent at Striker Bible Church: as pianist, church clerk and teaching the Busy Bees Sunday School Class. Later, Saturday mornings were devoted to Pioneer Girls, a Bible-based club for young girls that Alice and Twila Doutt hosted in their home. After Bible teaching was prohibited in the schools, she began teaching public school in Logan County. She taught at the Tim's Fork School, the Lee Dingess School, and the Striker School, all one-room schools. Alice married Clell Adams on March 19, 1967. After her marriage, she taught at Lake Elementary, then Lane Grade School, where in addition to teaching, she was principal until the school closed. Alice finished her tenure as a public school teacher at West Chapmanville Grade School.
After retirement from public school teaching, Clell and Alice enjoyed several years together before his death in September, 1984. Alice began a ministry of sewing. Quilts, pillows, purses, and many other hand-made items can be found in missionaries' homes and others all over the world. Alice continued to be very active at the Striker Bible Church in her later years...
Survivors include a step-son, Lanna Adams of Chapmanville; step-grandchildren, Randy (Marilyn) Adams and Patty Brewster, both of Chapmanville, and Brian Adams of Pittsburgh, Pa.; great-grandchildren, Randilyn Mendez, Natalie Farley, Christopher Brewster and Michael Brewster; great-great-grandchildren, Raelynn, Dylan, Nolan and Nathaniel; two sisters, Marian Anderson of Florida and Ann Hart of Michigan and a host of other family and friends.
A Memorial Service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 29, at the Striker Bible Church with Pastor Richard Tanner officiating. Graveside services and burial will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, January 30, at Highland Memory Gardens at Godby with Rev. John E. Godby officiating.
