SARCOXIE PIONEER DEAD
Dr. J.F. Scott Died Suddenly Yesterday of Congestion of the Lungs

Came to Jasper County in 1868 - Was Prominent G.A.R. and Mason - Funeral Will Probably be on Sunday.

Editor PRESS: - It again becomes our painful duty to report the passing of another of our oldest citizens. Dr. J. F. Scott died at 3 o'clock a.m., Friday, August 18, 1905 of acute congestion of the lungs and heart trouble, at his home on Cross street, Sarcoxie, Missouri.
Dr. Scott was born in Centerburg, Ohio August 9, 1841, being at the time of his death sixty-four years and nine days old. He was married soon after he returned from the army to Miss Frank Elliott of near Coshocton, Ohio.
Two children were born to this union, a daughter ad a son,. Lillie, now Mrs. Dr. Crumly of Mt. Vernon, Ohio and Clay, who is also in Ohio.
The deceased came with his little family to Missouri about the year 1868; stopped awhile at old Jasper half way between Carthage and Sarcoxie. Later on he moved to Sarcoxie, bought a home and settled, and here his life's work has been done. He returned to Ohio about fifteen years ago and associated himself with his father in the practice of medicine, the burden of the practice having become too heavy in the old field for his father; but his home and friends in Missouri held a claim on him and he could not resist the inclination to return to his old haunts again.
His first wife died and was buried here previous to his return to Ohio, and he married Miss Nora Hewlett of Lawrence county, Missouri who with two children, a daughter and a son survive him. The daughter is Mrs. H. B. Boyd of this place and the son, John Hugh, who is here at present, having recently returned from Columbia, Missouri where he had been taking course in the law department.
Dr. Scott was a devoted member of the A.F. & A. M. lodge, and at the time of his death was post commander of Stanton Post No. 84, G.A.R. of Sarcoxie, and was making his arrangements to go to Denver to the National encampment which will occur soon. He entered the Union army from his native state when quite young; was a loyal soldier, and marched with Sherman to the sea. Like almost every other old soldier, for years he has suffered from the exposure he endured while he was in the army, and at least ten years of his life was given up for that cause, for very few who have passed through the exposure incident to soldier life over past the age of sixty-five. He has answered the last roll call. The last reveille and taps with him have been sounded, and Comrade J. F. Scott has pitched his tent on the eternal camp ground where sweet may be his sleep till he is called in grand review before our Great Commander.
Dr. Scott was a familiar face in Sarcoxie and will be missed from among us, and the announcement of his unexpected death was a great shock to his friends in this community, The funeral will not occur before Sunday. Rev. Dr. Knight, president of the Carthage Collegiate Institute, an old friend, and Rev. Diggs, pastor of the M. E. church South of this place, are expected to officiate. The funeral will be under the auspices of the G.A.R. post and probably the Masonic lodge. Notice will be given when arrangements are made more fully.

Funeral of Dr. Scott
The remains of Dr. J. F. Scott, the pioneer, who died as his home in Sarcoxie Friday, were laid to rest in Sarcoxie graveyard yesterday afternoon after one of the largest funerals ever held in that town. Dr. W. S. Knight of this city, who was a boyhood friend of the deceased preached the funeral sermon and was assisted in the services by Rev. Mr. Grigg, of Sarcoxie.
