She was born as Aaltje Spaan in Lemmer, Netherlands, the daughter of Simon Spaan & Rena Visser. In 1906 she immigrated to America with her parents & siblings and adopted the name Alice. She married Fred Mulder in 1916 in Grand Rapids, MI. They raised their 1 son & 4 daughters in Artesia, Ca.
