Ray Coolidge Carter, 89, of Chattanooga, TN, passed away on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at his residence.

Mr. Carter was a member of Temple Baptist Church and the Watts Sunday School Class.

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and retired from Reading Railroad.

He also served as a police officer with the Philadelphia Police Department and was preceded in death by his parents, William and Amanda Lois Carter; sisters, Martha Owens, Adi-Louise Birchett, Joann Stephenson, Carzell Durham, Virginia King, and Armell Holt; and brothers, David Carter, Paul Harold Carter, Bill Carter, Jr., and Clarence Carter.

Survivors include his wife, Martha McDowell Carter; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Debra Carter, Raleigh, NC, Ray and Jo Ann Carter, Philadelphia, PA, Randy and Rhonda Carter, Thief River Falls, MN, and Greg and Carol Carter, Long Island, NY; sister, Barbara Jean Seabolt; brothers, Calvin and John Carter, all of Tellico Plains, TN; eleven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Rev. David Stancil and Rev. Shad Smith officiating. Military honors will be given.

The family will receive friends today from 4 - 8 p.m. at the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home & Crematory, located at the end of historic Missionary Ridge, Rossville, GA.
