Elmer was a World War II veteran that survived landing on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day.

He was in the Army Engineers and landed on Omaha Beach on his birthday 6 June 1944. Years later, he said that all he remembered was blood and bodies.

Before the service, he worked as a CCC. After he was discharged, he worked as a mill-right in Roseburg, Oregon and as a postman in Reno, Nevada.

He loved to go fishing and rock hunting with his nieces. He also loved to do lapidary work.
