Growing up, Walda was kind of a tomboy and was always doing one thing or another to try her parents patience. She was just always full of life and adventure.
After her father died, she moved with her mom and sister to Oklahoma. She lived with her Aunt Polly and Uncle Ernie in Woodward, Oklahoma while her mom was attending beauty school in Enid. One time, she packed her suitcase and told her sister and aunt that she was going to run away from home. Aunt Polly told her that was okay, but to stop by the store and ask Uncle Ernie for a quarter, so that she would have some money. She wasn't gone very long...
About a year after her mom graduated, they moved back to Oakland, California and lived there until 1939, when her mom remarried and the moved to Reno, Nevada.
She left Reno when she was 16 and moved to San Diego with her step-sister. While there, Walda was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. She married Elmer Kerner in 1952 and moved to Oregon. From there, they moved back to the Reno area.
In Reno, Walda had a real estate license and worked for Winn Realty. Later, she was senior counselor at Wittenberg Hall, which was a detention home for the girls. She was always very compassionate for the girls that were living there, and the circumstances that they found themselves in. While working at the detention hall, she was hit in the head with a softball which caused her to start losing her sight when she was 40. She was completely blind for a few years before she passed away at the age of 47, due to kidney failure (a complication of her diabetes).
