Walter was born in Wakita, Oklahoma, but his family was living in Eagle, Harper County, Kansas by the time he was 4. He lived there until he moved to Tucumcari, New Mexico around 1925 where he worked on the railroad (three of his brothers came with him). Walter was a Chief Machinist and worked for the Rock Island and Southern Pacific Railroads. He also owned the Desota Agency & Garage in Tucumcari, New Mexico.

He was a member of the IOOF and was Noble Grand of that organization. Walter was also a member of the Woodsmen of the World. Both he and his father were checker champions of Kansas. He was an avid baseball player and his team won New Mexico State champions several years.

All of his family was very musical, playing different musical instruments. He mainly played the trumpet but could play several others. His brother Andy said Walter could play any horn that he picked up.

He met and married Violet Pool in Logan, Quay, NM on 2 October 1926 on the Logan Bridge. It was the highest bridge in the United States until the Royal Gorge Bridge was finished the next year. They honeymooned on Catalina Island in California.

They moved to Oakland, California in 1936 where he worked as a machinist for the railroad. They moved to Alameda the next year, because it was closer to his work. Walter became ill towards the end of 1937 and was unable to work, so they moved back to Tucumcari, NM. He died there on 28 December 1937 from heart complications due to the illness that he had been suffering with (it was undiagnosed).

Note: While his headstone also shows Violet Pool Kuykendall, she was buried in Reno, Nevada next to her second husband.
