Retired U.S. Army Staff Sergeant (Promotable)James "Jim" Wilbur LeCompte Jr., 79, of Pembroke died Friday, November 20, 2009, in his sleep after a lengthy illness. A longtime resident of Fayetteville, Jim was born Aug. 23, 1930, in Baltimore, to James Wilbur LeCompte Sr. and Alice May Lowman, both of Baltimore. He was preceded in death by both of his parents; two sisters, Betty LeCompte and Lucile Silvers, both of Baltimore; a stepson, Donald Ray Zemke of Fayetteville; and a great-granddaughter, Kristen Brooke Arnold of Duncan, Okla. He is survived by his brother and sister, Stephen Leonard LeCompte of Woodbin, Md., and Mary Frances "Mary Jane" Pheiffer of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 10 children, James Wilbert LeCompte of Aransas Pass, Texas, Jonathon Wayne LeCompte of Hope Mills, Betty Kay Smith of Amarillo, Texas, Michael Stephen LeCompte Sr. of New Caney, Texas, Gregory Lee LeCompte of Phoenix, Howard Joseph LeCompte of Boulder, Colo., Crystal Jaline Stain of Sherwood, Ark., Kimberly Edith LeCompte of Mesquite, Texas, Timothy Bonnell LeCompte of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Janie Delores LeCompte of Denver; two stepdaughters, Theresa Anna Zemke of Denver and Sheila Ann Hester of Fayetteville; an adopted daughter, Annie Neal "Missy" Barry of Cary; 28 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Jim was a retired U.S. Army veteran, who served during both the Korean War and Vietnam War from 25 August 1948 until retirement at Fort Bragg on 30 Sep 1969.
