Funeral services for Laura Louise Forsythe, 95, were Saturday, December 15, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church of Waskom, Waskom Texas. Officiating was the Rev. Ed Bowman. Interment followed in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, LA.

Laura went into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 11, 2012 in Longview, Texas. Laura was born on February 21, 1917 in the Flournoy-Wise home in Greenwood, La. That home was built in 1840 and has been in the family since that time.

The Flournoys were early settlers in Caddo Parish, hence the town of Flournoy, now part of West Shreveport, and the Flournoy Lucas Road. Laura's father, Lucien Flournoy died in the influenza epidemic of 1918. Lucien was married to Lillie May Flournoy. Lillie raised four children in addition to Laura: Lillian Flournoy Hammett, Mary Wise Flournoy, Alma Flournoy Rountree, and Lucien Flournoy, who was born six months after his father died. Lillie was a woman who was tall in stature, standing 6 feet tall, and she also had tremendous stature and reputation in the community. She raised the five children through the depression, and sent them all to college by selling cotton, raising cattle, and taking in boarders. Lillie was a major influence on her children and grandchildren, and the house in Greenwood was the center of family activity through her death in 1965, and continues to be a gathering place for the family. The family was very close knit their entire lives. Laura had a wonderful sense of humor, and the sibling rivalry with her brother and sisters never seemed to end. She is survived by her son, and seven nieces, as well as two nephews. Her nephew Roger Hammett passed away earlier this year. She truly loved her nieces and nephews as her own children.

Laura finished school in Greenwood and attended Louisiana State Normal College, now known as Northwestern. She was a camp counselor at Lake Fern and Camp Longhorn, and a taught canoeing and swimming for many years. She went into her chosen profession of teaching, as did all the women in the family. She had a God-given love of children and put her heart and soul into teaching her fourth grade students. For many years she taught fourth grade and her sister Mary taught second grade at Greenwood elementary. Her lifelong friend, Elizabeth White Stutsman taught third grade. Laura's love of children never diminished. Even in older age, whenever she would see a baby, she would become very excited and interested in the child. She married Eugene M. Forsythe in 1947, and they lived in nearby Waskom. She continued to teach at Greenwood, and she left her only son, Eugene, Jr. with his grandmother Lillie while she taught. Lillie taught Gene, Jr. reading and math before he started school. After retiring from Greenwood, she taught through the Head Start program. She would seek out children in extreme poverty or who were disabled and teach them life skills, including reading. She taught children's Sunday school at First Presbyterian Church in Waskom, and was a faithful member there until her death. Her teaching was truly a gift from God. She demonstrated her unconditional love for her son throughout her lifetime so that he never doubted that love, and the two were best friends throughout her life. She suffered from Alzheimer's for about 13 years, but she was able to stay in her home in Waskom with the assistance of loyal caretakers until about a year before her death. For all that time, she was able to attend church, go out to eat, and appreciated being in her own home. The caretakers truly seemed to be sent from God. Among them were Mary White, Katherine Wales, Betty McGee and many others. The family is grateful to Dr. P. V. Blanchard, her physician for 40 years who helped her with his professional skill and caring for those many years. His nurse Vicky Burnett and all the staff at Willis-Knighton North provided excellent care through many visits to the office and hospital.
