World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Faversham, England, he served as a Lieutenant in the 15th Field Company, Corps of the Royal Engineers, British Army. On December 19, 1914, Lieutenant Neame' s company came under German attack at a farm house near Neuve Chapelle, France. He crawled along an open ditch in order to discover where the enemy positions were then gave orders for all the company's supply of bombs. With pin-point accuracy he then proceeded to bomb and defeat an enemy machine gun position, thus putting an end to any further resistance. After this action, he also went out and rescued all the wounded whom it was possible to move. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was promoted Captain and presented the Victoria Cross by the King at Windsor Castle on February 18, 1915. Remaining in the service, he served with honor in World War II, achieved the rank of Lieutenant General and was appointed a Deputy Lord Lieutenant of the County of Kent, England in 1955. Also of note, at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, he was a member of the British shooting team and won a Gold Medal in the Running Deer competition shooting event. He is the only Victoria Cross recipient to ever win an Olympic Gold Medal. He died at his home at age 89 in Selling, England.
