Mary Elizabeth Doyle, born in Cleatmore, England, on May 1, 1881, during the reign of Queen Victoria, sailed to America as a child with her family.

A vigorous woman of strong Irish heritage, she was dedicated to nursing for much of her long life, continuing in her profession well beyond her 80th birthday, said her nephew, Gerald Hickey of Charlotte.

She moved to Charlotte more than a dozen years ago and kept her own apartment until she was 100 years old, when she moved to her nephew's home.

Miss Doyle died at home Wednesday from a heart problem at age 104.

The funeral will be at 7:30 tonight at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, where she was a member, with rosary to follow. Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Belmont Abbey Cemetery in Belmont.

Miss Doyle could recall sailing past the then-new Statue of Liberty as a youngster, said Hickey, 58.

She came with her parents, Nicholas Doyle and Ann Darrigan Doyle, and siblings. Her father found work in the Pennsylvania mines.

Miss Doyle studied nursing in Philadelphia and practiced mostly in the New York City area, working for many years in the maternity ward in Brooklyn's Methodist Hospital.

''She remained an alert individual, interested in current events, and she very seldom brought up the past,'' Hickey said. ''She was up on everything, really, until about three months ago when her health began failing.''

Memorials can be made to the American Heart Association, 1300 Baxter St.,

Suite 101, Charlotte, N.C. 28204; or to the American Cancer Society, 1928

Randolph Rd., Suite 314, Charlotte, N.C. 28207.
