Served as a private in Captain James Word's Georgia Volunteers. His widow, Malinda Foster Miller Barge, was granted a Widow's Pension by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1892. The amount of the monthly stipend was raised from $8 to $12 a month in 1908.
He is the son of Richmond Barge (8 May 1778 - 23 Jun 1857) and Margaret Parker Barge (1786 - 12 Feb 1865)

Edward and Malinda had nine children:

Nathaniel Miller Barge, 1845-1862;
Richmond Barge, 1846-1907;
Malissa (Malina) Barge, 1848- ;
Zachary Taylor Barge, 1847-1922;
John Lewis "J L" Barge, 1850-1907;
Claiborn Barge, 1852-1907;
Jacob A. Barge, 1856-1884; and
Ann Marie (Maria) Barge, 1857-1948.
