Artist, Royal Academy. Born in London to an Irish picture dealer and the husband of Harriet Geddes. Becoming an associate member of the Royal Academy in 1814 he was elected R.A. in 1820 he painted over 200 major works and hundreds of minor ones. Taught by Morland he would write his biography Life of George Morland. He specialized in landscapes and genre scenes. He was also a close friend to Sir David Wilkie, after whom he named his oldest son.One of the more famous artists of his day, he had both wealthy industrialists and aristocratic patrons which included King George IV, Sir Robert Peel, the Prime Minister, and four dukes. With the exception of two years that he was in Italy he had an exhibit every year between 1807 until his death. He had two sons, both of whom became known in their day. William "Wilkie" Collins a well known Victorian author, who wrote a biography of his father Memoirs of the Life of William Collins, Esq., R.A. published in 1848 and Charles Allston Collins also an artist and writer who married Kate, a daughter of Charles Dickens.
