He was the first born child of James Crane & Christina (Hall) Crane. Two more boys & two more girls would be born to the couple. James, John's father, served in the War of 1812. He was in the 31st Regiment, Maryland Militia. They had been farmers in Maryland & as part of the Maryland Ridge Settlement Group in the mid 1820's, moved to Indiana. This migration took place over a two year period because of beliefs on slavery.
John had met & married Abigail Burch, a preacher's daughter, in Indiana. They married in 1829 and had 12 children between 1830 - 1856. They farmed the land in Indiana for decades. They bought more land over the years and all was well until one day his son John Norval Crane II moved to Nebraska to start over. He encouraged his parents to come with him, which they did. This was quite an undertaking because of their ages; the seniors were in their 80's. This did not go well for them. John Norval Crane I died the year after moving, Abigail kept the farm going as best she could until 1894 when she died. John Norval II had moved to California & checked on his parents (mostly his mother) now & then, but she just wore out. A list of their children are attached to her Find A Grave page.
