Motion Picture Director, Cult Figure. She defied every stereotype in Hollywood to achieve her career of over 28 films in her 40 year career. Born as the youngest child in a family of five in New york City, she grew up and worked in small clerical jobs until the death of her first husband, advertising executive Jack Abrams in 1960. To take her mind off her husband's death Doris decided she wanted to try her hand at filmmaking. She borrowed $10,000 from her sister Pearl for a most unusual film called "Hideout in the Sun". She wrote, produced and directed the film and it was coyly billed as a "naturist piece". Doris made stag films. And she was the only woman doing so at the time. She went on to cast such notables as legendary burlesque performer Blaze Starr and anomalous adult actress Chesty Morgan in a number of her features. She would use many pseudonyms for herself in the different areas of production to pump up the credits in her films. Doris wore almost every hat on her films and her film noir "sexploitation" style which included a series of films called "roughies", the most notable being "Bad Girls Go to Hell" has been studied not only by afficionados of the genre but by film schools nationwide. The irrascible director broke her way into the male dominated arena of adult film and succeeded. Her last film, "Each Time I Kill" was still in production when Doris was hospitalized for chemotherapy treatments for lymphoma. The harsh treatments robbed Doris of her voice, but not her tenacity. She scribbled production notes and other instructions to ensure the films completion, working literally until the day she died. In an interview given some months before she fell to her illness, the nintey year-old filmmaker was asked if she'd ever stop making movies. She answered, "When I die I'll make movies in Hell." Cause of death- complications due to lymphoma.
