Polish Monarch. Youngest son of King Sigismund III. Vasa and his second wife Constance of Austria. In 1640 he joined the Society of Jesus. He was Cardinal when he was elected to succeed his halfbrother Ladislaus IV. as king. During his reign he fought several wars. First he fought a alliance of the Cossacks, Tatars and the Ottoman Empire, later Russia and from 1655 on against Sweden under Charles X., too. In the Peace of Oliva he had renounce his rights of succession on the Swedish throne and accept Elector Friedrich Wilhelm of Brandenburgs sovereignty over the duchy of Prussia. In 1667 he lost Smolensk and the eastern part of the Ukraine to Russia. On May 29. 1649 he married his brothers widow Louise Marie Gonzaga. He abdicated in 1668 and retired as an Abbot to the Abbey St. Martin in Nevers. He also became titular Abbot of the Abbey of St. Germain de Prés. His body is buried in Krakow.
