Daughter of Mary Margaret Crist and Samuel David Benoist.

She married William Walton Bates when she was 17 years old;

They raised nine children - they are:

(m) Sidney "Sid" W. Bates 1912-1979

(m) Franklin "Frank" Cecil Bates 1914-1973

(m) Jessie James Bates 1917-1959

(m) Ernest "Ern" Alvin Bates 1920-1993

(f) Beulah Lee Bates 1923-1965

(f) Mary Elizabeth Bates 1925-2013

(m) Edwin N. Bates 1927-1970

(f) Ella L. Bates Yarborough 1929-1988

(f) Anna Bell Bates 1931-1934

Always a positive influence, Frances was loved for her attitude of hospitality and service. Never did a person enter her doorway without her offer of food and comfort. She was a tiny ball of energy, and remained a rock of courage even through the eventual losses of seven of her nine children and her spouse. She was a widow 25 years.

She was completely devoted to her "boys" and daughters, and every son-in-law and daughter-in-law was treated as well as her own children were.

Although a homebody all her life, she (past the age of 90) was willingly "boosted" into the cab of her son-in-law's 18 wheeler and enjoyed the trucking ride from Texas to her daughter's home in Arizona!

There, some grandchildren and some great grandchildren, who had never met her, were thrilled to finally hug their "Granny Bates". After returning to her home, she set out to make hand stitched quilts to be given to those who had not yet received one. She finished this task shortly before her death at 96.

Always kind and sweet, she will be forever missed.
