Hastings - The entire commiunity was saddened Monday by the death of Dr. Elbert G. Coe (1874-1949), prominent local merchant, mayor of the town, and a leader in local church and civic circles. He passed away in a St. Augustine hospital, after an extended illness.
Dr. Coe, age 74, was born in Edison, Ohio, but spent the greater part of his long and useful life in St. Johns County, first engaging in the operation of a drug store in St. Augustine and later coming to Hastings, where he soon became active in every worthwhile movement. He was a charter member of the St. Augustine Rotary Club, and charter president of the Hastings Rotary Club. He was a loyal member of the Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge and the Shrine. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Emma Walker Coe, a daughter, Miss Dorothy Ellen Coe of Hastings; and a son, George Walker Coe of Old Orchard Beach, Maine; a sister, Mrs. William (Lulu M.) Taber, Edison Ohio, and two brothers, Ray McCormick Coe of Bunnell and Dr. Fred O. Coe, Washington, D.C.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist Church here, with the pastor, Rev. W. C. McGarity, officiating. Interment was made in Oak Hill East Cemetery in Palatka. (Palatka Times-Herald Obituary dtd Friday, 13 May 1949.)
